100th Day of School

Today was the 100^th day of school! To celebrate this special day, our second graders took part in many special activities in the classroom. At the beginning of the week students began to brainstorm what they would do and what they would look like if they were 100 years old. Students were very creative with the ideas they came up with! There were ideas such as knitting clothes for their great-grandchildren, having wrinkles and white hair, or walking with their walkers down the street. After discussing these ideas, students worked on a rough draft of what they would do and look like if they were 100 years old. 

Today, students edited these rough drafts and completed their final draft. Using a special aging app, students could also see what they may look like when they get older. They loved this part of the activity! Their writing and pictures can now be seen in our classroom window facing the hallway.

Today we also had 100^th day center work. At each of these centers, students worked on a different 100^th day activity. At the first center, students worked on “100^th Day News”. This newspaper article writing allowed students to write about different things about the number 100. Such as what they would like to buy with $100 or what they think they will be doing in 100 years. Students enjoyed writing their own 100^th day newspaper article.

Another center involved dice. Each student had two dice and they needed to roll them 100 times while keeping track of the sum of each roll on a sheet of paper. After rolling their dice 100 times they looked over their sheet to see which sum had the most and which sum had the least amount of rolls. It took students quite a while to roll their dice 100 times but they were excited to see which number would “win” the rolling contest.

The next center involved students drawing each of their hands on a large sheet of paper. Each student in the classroom drew both of their hands and then colored in their hands and wrote their name next to their hands. Since there are 10 students with 10 fingers, our whole class combined makes 100 fingers. This large strip of paper stating, “Our Fingers are 100 Days Smarter” is now hanging in the hallway next to our classroom. Feel free to come out and see it!

The last center was definitely a classroom favorite. 100^th day hats were made by 10 strips of colored paper all connected to one long piece of paper for the bottom of the hat. Students were responsible for putting 10 stickers, 10 hole punches, or 10 stamps on each of the colored strips of paper. After putting each of these 10 things on each strip, students would have 100 objects on their hats! Students finished off these hats by gluing on “I am 100 days smarter!” on the front of their hats. These second graders proudly wore these hats around the school for the rest of the day!

Overall, the 100^th day was a complete success and our second graders had a blast with our 100^th day activities. Feel free to stop by the classroom and see the students’ work!
